Unless you’ve studied anatomy, you may not even realize you have a temporomandibular joint (TMJ). It works like a sliding hinge, connecting your skull to your jawbone. It’s awfully important, given that you can’t chew without it!
It also may be the cause of persistent jaw pain if you have a TMJ disorder (TMD). If you’ve got an aching jaw, our Murrells Inlet and Georgetown, SC dentist at The Smile Center can evaluate you for TMD. More important, they can create a custom oral appliance for you that may relieve your pain and help you with your TMJ treatment.
Call The Smile Center for a TMJ treatment consultation.
The Mysterious TMD: TMJ Disorder
TMD’s cause is still somewhat of a mystery. Among the possibilities:
- Genetic predisposition
- Jaw injury
- Teeth Grinding (bruxism)
Diagnosing a TMD can be tricky too. Our Georgetown, SC dentists will discuss your symptoms with you, review your medical and dental histories, and examine your head, neck, and jaw. We will also likely take X-rays.
How We Treat TMD
If we diagnose a TMD, our dentists will design a custom oral appliance for you that can alleviate your symptoms. If you grind your teeth, it may also be helpful to wear a custom night guard.
In addition, we may suggest:
- Taking an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory pain reliever, like ibuprofen
- Applying ice packs
- Practicing stress-reduction techniques
