Two Types of Dental Sedation
We use two types of dental sedation:
- Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas”
- Oral sedatives
These methods offer different levels of sedation, and there are pros and cons to each approach. Our dentists will help you determine which type of dental sedation is right for you.
We’ve provided an overview of each method of dental sedation here.
Nitrous oxide, often referred to as “laughing gas,” produces a mild euphoria. We administer it through a small mask you wear over your face. Its effects wear off quickly, and you’ll be able to drive yourself home following your procedure.
It is so safe, we can even give it to children. It is also easy for us to increase or reduce the amount of nitrous you receive.
Because it is the mildest form of sedation, it may not be enough for more severe cases of dental anxiety.
Dr. John Miller is our expert, having completed advanced training with the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation. Our dentists use oral sedatives that are considered highly safe. They’ll consider your medical history, among other factors, before giving you an oral sedative.
You will need to arrange for a ride home from your procedure.
